Castle Taurus
Today I focused closer to a castle very much its original location (built on an island) and by its history (it must be said that by his name, too). It is the Chateau
Taurus :
This castle-shaped stone vessel is a jewel of Heritage Finistère and Brittany, it is located on the Bay of Morlaix
Born a collective will to protect themselves from the English threat, the castle was built in 1542 on the rocky island of Taurus, on the initiative of residents and shopkeepers in the town of Morlaix. In the eighteenth century, Louis XIV has transformed by Vauban. The building was greatly extended to house now housing the soldiers and officers, two dungeons, a canteen, a kitchen, a chapel and 11 bunkers.
In 1721, the castle was diverted from its mission of defense to assume the duties of prison.
Laid up in 1890, the castle Taurus turns into a summer residence before being invested by the DCA during the German War World.
In 1960, the fort found civilian use until 1980 and hosts a sailing school. Abandoned, the monument is deteriorating rapidly. By 1989, public opinion and mobilize local communities, a new project for the building is running well. In 1996, the state allocates 17 million francs to begin its restoration. A cultural and tourism for the public opening is then developed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Morlaix and its partners. 2006 will mark the completion and the start of a renaissance for this strong historical witness of the Bay of Morlaix.
