The spars, rigging and fittings.
A sailboat needs not only to use the sails to the wind and move forward, but a system to raise the sails. The simplest system is a stick on a piece of fabric. The club took the name mast, a mast but not enough for the piece of fabric captures well the wind. We need a more complex system: For sails puffed requires, in addition to the mast, spars others who can deploy them and guide them in some way.
And then, we need a system to support, guide and regulate the spars and sails; system that uses mobile and fixed ropes up the rigging .
This rig can not operate effectively, especially over a certain size of boat with accessories that attach ropes, sending them back, redouble the efforts, etc.. This set of fittings, clamps, pulleys, winches or winches, etc.. constitutes the hardware .
We are talking about gear (plural particular device ) for major parts such as capstans, winches or heavy that relates to anchor (anchor, etc.)
The ensemble atte int maximum complexity in the early 20th century with the great sailing 3, 4 and even 5 masts, sails and forty miles of rope.
